Here’s how to start a pet care blog in 7 easy steps:

  1. Join Squarespace. Yes, there are other options. But this is the easiest way to get your pet blog started. No coding needed. They have beautiful templates, graphics, and more.

Squarespace is a billion-dollar corporation listed on the New York Stock Exchange and has been in business since 2004. It’s legit.

It’s going to cost between $20 and $30 per month. But if you don’t love it, you can cancel after one month. Plus, with my Squarespace link, you’ll see a discounted price.

If you’re being serious about starting your pet blog, take step one.
  2. Give your pet blog a name. Have fun here! Squarespace makes it easy to see if your domain name is available.

  1. Monetize your pet blog. I’ll explain how to make money with your pet blog with ads, affiliate links, selling online courses, providing coaching, brand partnerships, and more. There are plenty of ways to make money through pet blogging!
  1. Brainstorm ideas for posts/articles. The best pet care blogs answer questions on the minds of pet owners and pet sitters.

You can also review pet products like dog food, dog toys, kitty litter, dog beds, and so on.

You might decide to cover more specialized niches like how to travel safely with your cat or how to care for a diabetic dog.
  2. Write and publish your first post. I love that Squarespace has a mobile app that lets you publish right from your phone. It’s exciting to see the stats of how many people are reading your blog articles and when people leave comments on your posts.

Squarespace gives you blog analytics to learn more about your audience.
  1. Promote your pet blog. Use social media, email, search engine optimization (SEO), and other tools to attract readers with pets.

Optional step (sort of): While you don’t need to create a limited liability company (LLC) to start a pet care blog, it’s a good idea. An LLC makes your business look a lot more legit. But most importantly, an LLC:

  • Can help you save money on taxes
  • Protects your personal assets like home, vehicles, and jewelry safe in case your pet blog is sued or goes bankrupt (unlikely but possible)
  • Allows you to be anonymous as a business owner, keeping your full name and home address out of public records and off the internet

You can start your pet blog before making an LLC!

But soon after, you probably want to take care of this step. I’ve created an LLC for each of my online businesses. You can do it yourself or use a reputable service like Mark Cuban’s ZenBusiness

How to Make Money With a Pet Blog / How to Monetize a Pet Blog

Knowing how to start a pet care blog is one thing. Figuring out how to make money with your pet blog is another.

Here are proven methods for pet blog monetization:

  • Affiliate marketing. Join a company’s affiliate program, and then post links to the company’s products on your blog. When someone clicks a link and makes a purchase, you get a commission!

Here are 3 pet affiliate programs to get you started:

1 – Join the free Temu affiliate program – they have cheap prices on pet products

2 – Learn how to make money with the Chewy affiliate program in my review

3 – Join the Amazon affiliate program for another way how to make money with your pet care blog

You’ll earn a commission when people click through your affiliate link to buy Chewy products, including the brilliantly named “Chewbacca” toy.

Similar to affiliate marketing are referral programs such as these referral bonus apps and ways to earn 20 dollars per referral.

  • Advertisements. This is probably the easiest way to monetize your pet blog because it’s completely passive. Sign up for an ad network, and you’ll get paid because you’re letting companies show their ads to your audience.

Popular ad networks for pet bloggers include Mediavine and Google AdSense.
  • Selling online courses. As the creator of a pet blog, you’re marketing yourself as an expert or enthusiast. People want to learn from you!

You can sell pet care courses using the Thinkific platform and promote them from your blog. Imagine you create a short video series explaining dog grooming or understanding cat psychology and sell it for $15. You can sell this course to thousands of people for years!

  • Email marketing and newsletters. If you can reach people in their inboxes, you can turn them from occasional readers into genuine fans. You could also get readers to buy a paid subscription to your pet care newsletter.

Use the best email marketing software to collect email addresses, send newsletters, and more.

Every website I’ve worked on, including this one, we prioritize connecting with our audience via email. That’s because social media algorithms and search engine algorithms change. But if you have a person’s email address, you can always communicate with them.

One day soon, you’ll have 50,000 pet owners on your email list.

Imagine sending a note to them that popular pet products are on sale for Black Friday. And you use your Temu affiliate link. That one email could earn you thousands of dollars in commission.

  • Sponsored posts and brand partnerships. Companies pay bloggers to promote products on their sites.

One blog I worked with charged a minimum of $10,000 for each sponsored post/brand partnership. And no, we didn’t have millions of views per month.

The key is to have an audience that loves your content and is eager to learn more about brand partners that can help them achieve their goals.
  • Selling pet ebooks. This is another way to sell your expertise. Is there a certain topic that readers are especially interested in? Then, write about it and sell it as a separate ebook that you promote on your blog.

Pet blogging is a legit way:

Pet blogging is a great business to start with 10k or with no money if you know how to build an audience with content creation.

Pet blogging is a real way how to turn 10k into 100k. And pet blogging is one of the best business ideas for women who love animals.

Pet Blog Pros and Cons

Ready to start a pet blog? I think it’s a great idea (why not turn puppy love into profit?) – but consider these pros and cons before going all in.

Pros:

  • There are many ways to monetize a blog. That’s why blogging makes my list of the most profitable online businesses.
  • You’ll have a ton of fun (which is great for profits). Your passion for pets will be obvious to your readers, which should increase your pet blog’s popularity. I always support using your hobbies to make money!
  • It doesn’t cost much. Sure, there are expenses, such as your blog builder like Squarespace, but not many. There’s a reason blogging is featured in my article on low-cost business ideas with high profit.

Cons:

  • Pet blogging is a competitive niche. This is a dream job for lots of people – so you’ll want to stand out from the crowd. You don’t have to be better, necessarily. You must be different.
  • You’ll have to build an audience. Being shy is OK. Refusing to promote your content is not OK. You can crush it if you’re willing to choose at least one online marketing path, such as Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook, X / Twitter, SEO, YouTube, TikTok, Paid Ads, etc.
  • You won’t earn big touchdown money right away. When you first start a pet blog, your main readers will be your friends and family. But as you post great pet care content, people will tell each other – word-of-mouth marketing!

The part most people mess up is not getting started or giving up too quickly. Once you gain momentum, it gets easier and easier, and you’ll start making money from your pet blog.

Tips To Start a Pet Care Blog

If you’re thinking, “I’m gonna start a pet care blog to make tons of money!” Hold your horses! And your golden retrievers and your little hedgehogs. Yes, pet blogging can be lucrative. But you’ll want to use smart online marketing strategies.

Here are my best tips to start a pet care blog:

  • Choose a very specific topic. Pet care is itself a niche, but it’s a broad one. Get more specific! Less is more in online marketing. Remember, you can start with a sharp focus and then broaden out later.

Amazon started by selling only books! You can make your mark by focusing on pet care sub-topics such as
  • pet care while traveling
  • pet care with kids
  • lizard care
  • pet care for families with cats, dogs, and birds
  • pet care for music festival fanatics
  • pet care for senior citizens
  • pet blog for people who live in small apartments
  • Tap the power of search engine optimization (SEO). Learning the basics of keyword research can help your blog posts appear higher up on search engines.

Squarespace has SEO tools built in.

SEO is similar to tagging on social media. You want to use the keyword phrases that people are searching for so they can find your posts.

SEO is one of the main ways I promote this site.

  • Promotion is a huge part of pet blogging. You can do this yourself or hire blog marketing help on Upwork or Fiverr.

I’ve been featured in Forbes, Yahoo Finance, Fox Business, Nasdaq, Newsweek, and many more. This is one of the main ways I promote my site, Touchdown Money. You reach out to reporters as an expert source.

So when a reporter is writing an article about pet care, they’ll ask for your input and mention your pet blog.

Other sites I’ve worked with promoted their content by

  • Creating relationships with other bloggers in their niche by emailing them, commenting on their posts, and networking at in-person events such as BlogPaws.
  • Posting on social media
  • Posting on Pinterest
  • Write like you’re speaking to a friend. You’re not starting a cold corporation. Blogging is a warm, friendly form of communication. Imagine your friend is asking you pet care questions. Then, answer by sharing your expertise and experience in a down-to-earth way!

Good writing is rewriting. That means your first draft is to get your ideas out. Next, go over your writing to remove unnecessary words, make it more fun and full of emotion, and make sure you’re covering all the angles.
